Reconciling US Stock Statements (Schwab/Fidelity) for Indian ITR is a multi-day nightmare. How to skip the Excel hell.

TaxGuide

Hey everyone,

If you hold US stocks or ETFs as an Indian tax resident, you already know that standard US broker statements are practically useless for Indian Income Tax Returns (ITR). Reconciling them manually usually means hitting these three walls:

The Calendar vs. Financial Year Trap: US brokers provide tax documents on a Jan–Dec basis. You have to manually map every single dividend and trade execution into the Indian Apr–Mar window.

The SBI TT Rate Scavenger Hunt: You must convert every transaction to INR using the exact SBI Telegraphic Transfer (TT) Buying Rate of the last day of the preceding month. Tracking historical charts line-by-line is an absolute nightmare.

Schedule FA Paranoia: Calculating the "peak value" and closing balances throughout the year is incredibly tedious—and honest reporting mistakes carry a rigid ₹10 lakh penalty under the Black Money Act.

How I automated the transaction mapping

Tired of doing this multi-day Excel project every season, I ended up writing a lightweight script for myself. I just feed it my account summaries or realized gains reports, and it formats everything into the Indian FY, maps the historical SBI TT rates, and gives me a raw text output for Schedule FA and the FTC calculations.

Since I'm paranoid about financial privacy, I added an option to delete data once you are done.

It completely saved my sanity this week. If anyone else is stuck in Excel hell trying to clean up their data before handing it over to their CA and wants to try it out, let me know and I can share it.

Otherwise, how are the rest of you surviving the SBI TT rate mappings this year?
