Life 360 question "Always" vs "While Using App" for IOS

Only 1 day of going back to life 360.

So my S/O had "location permission off" for a bit until i flagged it and said it's because they only have it as "while using app". but before that I was able to see their location the entire day and while driving earlier as well. They said that it was on "while using apps" permission only and said maybe the app was running on the background since the permission is on "while using app". But it was hours of being active the suddenly off.

Question is, I was able to see driving and location changes, and then suddenly location turned off. said it was probably when closed the app. Is that possible for the app to run on the background for that long?
