Getting a Prius II as a first car

Hi, I'm completely new to car buying. From the research I've done so far, I think an affordable hybrid car would suit my needs pretty well, and I've heard a lot of good things about the Toyota Prius line. In particular, people say that the second gen of Prius cars are "tanks"; would this be a sensible choice to go with?
