Need some outside advice and thoughts M24
My girlfriend and I recently broke up after 5 years together. I’m trying to make sense of it and would appreciate an outside perspective.
When we first got together she was struggling with anxiety and was on medication to help manage it. Over the course of that year I was always there for her and she slowly came off them.
Last year she went through another really difficult period with her stomach and leaving the house she would become inconsolable at the thought of going out in case she felt sick. I supported her through all of it. We had trips and plans fall through because of it, including a Valentine’s Day we had planned which ended up being spent at home. I didn’t mind because I wanted to be there for her. During this time she had very little money and I was covering a lot of things between us. With medication she slowly got better and I encouraged and spoke to her about anything she needed.
This year we had a trip planned together which fell through when she got the flu, she was really upset and we both had really been looking forward to it. Because it wasn’t refundable i asked if i would be okay if i went with a friend and she agreed.
Shortly after, and this year in general, she became very focused on pushing herself out of her comfort zone solo hiking trips with strangers, new classes, new activities. I wasn’t as supportive of this as I could have been, though my concern was that meeting people from all over the country made it hard to form real friendships. Especially when she had friends closer to home who would be completely willing.
She then booked a solo trip abroad. She mentioned it to me and I tried to be supportive, but given how difficult the previous year had been and all the trips we had missed, I found it hard not to feel a little hurt that she had no interest in going somewhere with me this summer. I then booked a trip abroad for the two of us in July so we’d still have something together.
It was out 5 year anniversary, i had planned a night a way and somethings we could do together that day and she agreed. A few days later she then told me that the hiking group she had been keeping an eye on had a trip that day not too far away, and that she booked it but could cancel. She did end up cancelling because it would have meant we couldn’t go through with our plans but it was really annoying. I wanted to celebrate us being together for 5 years and her mind was focused on a hiking trip with strangers. I felt like i had to say something.
We argued and got over it. She said she felt like she couldn’t do things without me, and I explained that we only see each other a day or two a week (we lived an hour from each other and with our parents) so she has the entire rest of her time to do whatever she wants but when we have plans, especially for something like that, it’s not okay to suggest ditching them.
Around this time I was getting really anxious about a work placement I was on, and I started noticing how little she would talk to me during the day. At times a full week would go by where I’d barely hear from her. Texts would just be logistics of what she was doing and never a how are you or a conversation, and rarely a call in the evening. I raised it with her and she apologised and made more of an effort for a while.
Recently it started slipping again. I had been having a hard time the placement had been stressful, I was feeling very lonely, and I had just started medication for anxiety. She had been on similar medication herself so I was able to talk to her about it, and I told her I had been feeling lonely.
The day after I left her place she texted me twice the whole day despite knowing I had just started medication and wasn’t feeling great. I always said to her i never expect constant texting throughout the day, especially if she’s working or with friends. But during this period after what i had told her a day prior it was really upsetting. Yes she was busy that day but even when I’m busy myself or with friends, i still make the effort to check up or give small updates.
I called her asked to meet in person to discuss, she couldn’t and i hung up the phone, then got a text saying she could and she had things she wanted to say as well. When i heard this i raced down the road.
When we met she said she felt very guilty about the physical side of our relationship and that I deserved better in that regard. She talked about not wanting to feel tied down, wanting to be able to go wherever she wanted without factoring me in, and that she couldn’t see herself moving in together in the future because it would feel too serious. She said that shed feel guilty making any big plans or going away for months or more without me.
She felt our next few years looked very different. For these reasons she wanted to end things. I asked if she was sure given how long we’d been together, pointing out we’d have similar careers (teachers) and similar time off which would make travelling together easy, but she felt these issues would just keep coming up. It wasn’t completely mutual but it wasn’t bitter either. We do still care about each other.
The thing I keep coming back to is that I was there for her through some really dark periods financially, emotionally, practically. Now that I’ve been going through a hard time myself, she wasn’t willing to give me the same support. I can’t help feeling like I gave a lot during the hard times and when it was my turn, she checked out. The days prior to this when we were together all was 100%, but the second I would leave id feel so disconnected and alone. She had just finished college and secured a job, and less than 2 weeks after she ditches the relationship.
Has anyone been through something similar? Does this sound like two people wanting different things, or does the imbalance bother anyone else?
