ChatGPT's sidebar becomes unusable after ~300 conversations. I finally fixed it.
The breaking point was looking for a SQL query I'd written with ChatGPT "sometime last spring." I scrolled the sidebar for 20 minutes. Tried Cmd+F. Gave up.
Same account. Same browser. Left is the day before, right is the day after.
ChatGPT's sidebar searches titles only. No folders. No filters. After a few hundred chats it's a wall of "New chat", "Untitled", and titles that have nothing to do with what you actually asked.
So I built AI Toolbox. Six months in, it's the productivity layer I wish was native.
What it actually does
- Full-text search across every message (Cmd+Shift+F). Filter by question/answer, by date, exact match.
220 matches across 144 chats in 0.14 seconds. All offline, all in the browser.
- Unlimited nested folders. Pin chats to the top. Drag and drop.
- Auto-tags every conversation by topic (Coding / Writing / Research / Math / Business). Runs locally in your browser, zero AI cost.
- Type
@@in the compose box to reference any past conversation as context. Long ones get summarized so you don't blow the context window. - "Your Year in AI" wrapped card with your real stats and a usage heatmap. Free for everyone, shareable as PNG.
- Bulk export to Markdown (with YAML frontmatter for Obsidian/Notion), JSON, or PDF. Or bulk-archive 200 old chats in one action.
- Same search + bookmarks on Claude. Search + watermark removal on Gemini (the "AI-generated" sparkle).
What I care about most
- Conversation content is never stored on our servers. Local IndexedDB cache for instant search. Only metadata (folder structure, saved prompts, bookmarks) syncs, AES encrypted at rest.
- Smart Tags run entirely client-side. Zero per-user AI cost means we can keep it free.
- Works on Chrome / Edge / Brave / Opera / Arc / Vivaldi.
Free tier is generous: search, bookmarks, the wrapped card, collapsible messages, Smart Tags on your last 50 chats, the Command Palette, and limited use of folders / prompts / chains. Premium raises limits and adds all export formats, MP3 voice download, and cross-device sync.
