What makes you not learn Norwegian
Hi all,
I am a Spanish man (33) who has lived in Norway (Trondheim and Oslo) for about four years. I have been a student in an international master's in english, I have worked in low-wage jobs and now I am in a better position (full-time permanent office job).
Throughout the last 3 years, learning Norwegian has been my top priority, as I assumed that I would need to speak it if my goal was to settle for long term in Norway. Most of my knowledge comes from raw practicing with people, but also from language courses (NTNU, A1 to C2). Right now, most of my interactions with Norwegians (dating, friendly meetings, shops...) are in Norwegian and switching to english even feels strange.
However, I have many international friends and workmates who have been living in Norway for way longer (up to 10 years) and yet don't speak it. Honestly, I would not feel 100% safe living in a country whose language I don't speak. Also, I find it disgraceful to the society that has provided me so many possibilities and stability.
So, I would like to know, what is the psychology or the factors behind living here for a long time and not even thinking of learning Norwegian.
