This is another scenario involving the **full available map for the Base Catan + Seafarers expansion (4 players version).** As you can see from the map, it involves **one single island** made up with all the available resource tiles, including the three deserts and the two gold mines, around which all the water pieces are set.

Because there is only one island, the seafaring part of the game takes place around it, in order to find the ports. Yes, because on this scenario **the ports are outside of the island, and you have to sail to get to them.** As there is no land attached to the ports, players do not get the advantage of a tile or two producing resources when you get to them, so instead of that, three things happen: First, **in order to take the port, you only have to be able to park a ship on the edge linking the two piers,** using the normal rules for ships: sail form a seashore settlement on the mainland, keep the distance rules, etc. This will give you automatic access to the trade advantage which that port confers (3:1, or 2:1 wheat, or whatever it is) **without having to build a settlement.** But, **second, you get a VP for taking the port, which is waiting for you when you get there.** **And thirdly, if you do decide to build a settlement there, you can, and also upgrade it to a city, although this wouldn't carry an extra game benefit.** So that would be one VP for taking the port, and another for building a settlement, as normal with any settlement, and one more if you city up. Players are likely to do this late in the game, in the last dash for VPs, when you don't have time for building roads or you have become boxed in, but it can be built any time you want. Bear in mind that this reduces the number of productive settlements you can build on the island, but, on the other hand... they're easy VPs. And there are 10 of those ports available (although that involves quite a bit of sailing).

Amazingly, the symmetry lovers among you will be pleased to find out than the ten ports can be placed at the exact distance of four edges from each other all around the frame, so once you know this, you HAVE to place them like that, there’s no other way. Sorry, I don’t make the rules (except I do). When placing the ports, you can choose several different methods: a) random, b) on purpose, c) each player places one and you keep going round until they’re all set, d) the port chits start outside of the game board, unbuilt, and whoever gets their ship first to a designated space for a port chooses any port they want (first come first served)… That’s up to the group.

With the **island tiles, feel free to distribute them at will.** Again: random, on purpose, etc, and the same with the numbers on them. What we like to do is put **a number no better than a 3/11 on the gold mines to avoid making them too enticing, and to use the last remaining number (another 3 or 11) so that the first person to settle on a desert gets to put that number on the desert and name what resource it produces.** Every time that number is rolled, the player(s) settled there, after collecting the resource due for that roll, can decide to change the resource that (former) desert will produce in the next roll.

Because the land mass in this scenario is quite big, there will be plenty of 3-hex intersections available, both to start and to expand to, so resources will flow plentiful in no time and the temptation will be to just ignore the ports and accumulate points solely from the island. Well, to prevent this, **the victory conditions for this scenario are: 12 VPs + taking 2 ports, settled or unsettled.** There are 10 ports, so in a game for four players, there should be a couple to spare… unless someone takes more than their share and cuts you off. So do not neglect your sailing part.
