Why Hong Kong people walk so fast even when they are not late

I still live in Hong Kong, and one thing I notice every day is how fast people walk—even when there’s no obvious reason to rush.

It’s not really about being late. It feels more like a default setting.

Even in almost empty streets, people still walk like there’s a subtle pressure to keep moving at a certain speed.

It’s not aggression or stress. Nobody is pushing anyone. It’s just… the city has a shared pace.

In Cantonese, it kind of feels like 「唔好阻住人」 even when nobody actually says it.

Slow walking doesn’t feel “wrong,” but it somehow feels slightly out of place, like you’re not syncing with the environment.

And the interesting part is that no one is consciously rushing. Everyone just ends up moving fast anyway.
