Buying Omega 3 in India
Hi all, I’ve been planning to start taking Omega 3 supplements and ended up going down the rabbit hole of comparing most major brands available in the Indian market. Honestly, my conclusion is that the Indian omega 3 market kinda sucks!!
I’ve spent hours comparing labels, ingredients, forms, Reddit reviews, Amazon reviews, official websites, lab reports, etc. And the deeper I dug, the more confused and disappointed I became.
My shortlisting criteria may seem a bit stringent, but after hours of research, almost every product seemed to have some compromise:
- parabens
- ethyl ester (EE) form
- vague “deep sea fish” sourcing
- serving size manipulation
- artificial flavouring
- unclear labelling
- inconsistent reviews about smell/rancidity
I genuinely couldn’t find a single brand with a clean label and decent pricing.
One thing I noticed is that many brands inflate potency perception using serving sizes. A lot of products advertise things like “1500mg EPA DHA”, only to realize later that it’s for 2 capsules, not 1.
Another important thing..almost every Indian product contains parabens. I understand they may be considered safe within regulated limits, but personally I’d rather avoid them if natural alternatives are available.
The moment I filtered for:
- no parabens
- TG/rTG form
- decent EPA+DHA concentration
- transparent sourcing
…the options became extremely limited.
Most international brands clearly state the fish source — anchovy, sardine, salmon, etc. While many Indian brands do mention this too, some still use vague terms like “cold water fish” or “deep sea fish” without specifying species.
After following Reddit reviews and customer feedback for major Indian brands, oxidation/freshness also seems to be another hidden issue. I repeatedly came across complaints about fishy burps, rancid smell, sticky capsules, smell changes between orders, etc.
After all this, I honestly did not find a single Indian omega 3 brand that gave me full confidence.
I’ve currently zeroed down on NOW Foods Ultra Omega 3. It looks decent overall, but I’m concerned about its legitimacy and honestly it’s also a bit expensive for my wallet. Ive heard iHerb can be trusted if I go with this.
If I remove the paraben filter, these are probably the options I’d consider buying:
- Muscle Nectar Triple Strength (Triglyceride form)
- Naturaltein Triple Strength
- Tata 1MG 7X Strength
However, reviews for all of them seem mixed. Tata 1MG offers insane EPA+DHA concentration for the price, but I’m still unsure about long-term quality consistency.
Wellbeing Nutrition also technically seems decent formulation-wise, but personally I’m skeptical about the marketing and transparency.
At this point, I’m honestly just surprised how bad this market is for people like me who care about formulation quality and transparency.
Would genuinely love to hear what others here are using and whether anyone has feedback on my shortlisted options.
