US stock investing
I’m trying to understand whether there are any Australian super funds that allow genuine direct investing into US stocks without needing to set up a SMSF.
At the moment I’m with an industry super fund and have been looking into options like Member Direct / Choiceplus etc. From what I can tell, most only allow ASX shares + ETFs like NDQ/IVV/VGS rather than actual NYSE/Nasdaq stock picking.
The reason I’m interested is that I feel like over the long term I could potentially generate stronger returns by concentrating on a smaller number of high conviction US growth stocks (AI, semis, cloud etc.) rather than just sitting entirely in standard balanced/index options for the next 30 years.
I understand:
- concentration risk
- most people underperform the market
-SMSFs have admin/compliance costs
- ETFs are usually the safer option
But I’m curious what more experienced investors here have done.
Questions:
- Are there any non-SMSF super products that allow direct US equities?
- Has anyone moved from industry super -> SMSF specifically for US investing?
- At what balance did SMSF start making sense financially?
- Did anyone regret moving away from simple index investing?
- Or is using NDQ/IVV inside super + individual US stocks outside super the better path?
- Would appreciate hearing real experiences rather than just generic “don’t stock pick” advice.
