Seeking advice re: escalating concerns of discrimination.

Advice

Hi all! I’ll start by openly admitting that I am not a naturally confrontational person, and that’s largely why I feel like I failed today.

On my current unit I overheard a non-clinical staff member very loudly expressing her opinion on the Tickle v Giggle case, the judgement of which was recently upheld. She started with the usual claiming to support trans people, only to then divulge her true feelings by repeatedly misgendering trans women, referring to Roxanne Tickle as ‘a friggin’ ugly transgender’, claiming that our country is laughing stock due to this case, and complaining that ‘you can’t even have an opinion these days’, all while continuing to engage in transphobic rhetoric. She was keeping up with the case on her phone, watching news reports at her desk.

The failure that I feel is in not confronting her behaviour at the time. She was already engaging another staff member in her tirade, and while they were certainly reluctant they seemed to share the same basic beliefs.

I’m not transgender myself, but I do quietly identify as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community and this kind of rhetoric is repugnant to me. I suppose the advice I’m seeking is whether to confront her now after the fact, or to anonymously escalate my concerns directly to her manager. The only reason that I’m considering an anonymous report is that I will have to continue working on this unit for the foreseeable future. If I had a choice to walk away, I’d have no qualms putting my name to a complaint.

Have any of you had similar experiences or escalated your concerns?
