OpenRouter vs Direct APIs: How do you decide for production apps?
Hey everyone,
If you’re building multi-model AI apps right now, managing individual direct APIs (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, etc.) is becoming a massive headache.
You’re forced to deal with fragmented billing, tracking separate API keys, and handling manual failovers if a single provider drops dead.
I’ve been looking at OpenRouter as an infrastructure aggregation play. Instead of dealing with 10 different companies, it gives you a single API endpoint and one consolidated balance for hundreds of LLMs.
From a strategic and cost-governance perspective, it seems like a no-brainer for a few reasons:
No Vendor Lock-in: Lean startups can swap models instantly as prices drop or new frontier models launch without rewriting the integration code.
Automated Fallback: If OpenAI or Anthropic hits localized rate limits or outages, traffic automatically reroutes to a secondary model, ensuring uptime.
Unified Billing: One corporate card, one account balance, zero multi-currency invoicing mess.
The Trade-offs?
You're adding a third-party dependency layer, trusting them with your routing/data retention, and potentially taking a slight hit on edge latency compared to direct native tunnels.
For teams building in production: Are you going direct to the source, or are you utilizing an aggregator layer like OpenRouter? If you use OpenRouter, what are the biggest drawbacks you’ve hit regarding latency or hidden costs?
