Intermittent fasting is often presented as a modern health trend, but the truth is that this practice has existed for thousands of years. Ancient Ayurvedic texts and yogic traditions already described powerful principles about digestion, meal timing, and fasting long before modern nutrition science began studying them.

In Ayurveda, the concept of Agni — the digestive fire — explains how our bodies process food, energy, and even thoughts. According to these teachings, digestion is strongest when the sun is highest in the sky and weakest late at night. This is why traditional Ayurvedic guidance recommends eating your main meal during the day and finishing meals before sunset.

Interestingly, modern research on circadian rhythms is now confirming these ancient insights. Scientists have discovered that our metabolism, hormones, and digestive enzymes follow a daily rhythm influenced by sunlight. Late-night eating can disrupt these biological clocks and contribute to weight gain, fatigue, and poor metabolic health.
