Would Medicare for All actually be that expensive?

This applies to the US. It seems like private insurance companies make plenty of money on all of their patients under 65 because the majority don’t have severe health issues. If everyone was covered by Medicare and paid for it via taxes, wouldn’t that save the population AND the government money overall?
