Leader size

I mainly use lures. I have a 10 pound test main line to a snap swivel and I’d like to use my 8 pound test fluorocarbon as a leader from the swivel. I’m wondering how long I should have it from the swivel to my lure. I see most people say 3 feet but I feel as that’s too long for me for casting. Can I go 8 inches to a foot or could that mess up the presentation of my lure if my leader is too short?
