Your D2C packaging process may be wasting more labor than you think !!

Discussion

A pattern I keep seeing with growing D2C brands, they continue using zipper pouches + stickers long after the business has outgrown that stage.

In the beginning it makes sense, - Low MOQ , frequent design changes, Less risk of change in branding.. but operationally once business increases it becomes headache-

First put sticker on pouch, remove bubble n wrinkes then fill that pouch ..

that is double handling- your labor effective time to make pouch ready increases making labor expensive.

The other hidden issue: supply inconsistency- You changed the vendor due to lower cost from another vendor- but problem is new vendor has 8*12 pouch slightly diffrent in size compared to previous vendor - but you got stickers printed as per previous pouch design.

Another issue: Once you put sticker on the pouch, you start filling your product which increases pouch surface which sometime peel of sticker slightly or I should say create gaps in sticker and pouch surface.

Solutions you can look:

  1. Custom stamping: Similar to business seal stamp you can get a 4*5 inch stamp similar to your designed logo and info.. you can get it from stamp makers (but check whether they have such large machine or not)-- more about this in next post.
  2. Screen Printing : You can go with screen printing - it works best for simple designs and decent quantity, cost about 50-70 paise per side approx. (depend on quantity and negotiation), screen printing has its own pros and cons, I will cover in next post.
  3. Digital printing: You can go with this kind of printing if you have decent pouches to print of 1 type apprx. 1000-1200 each size and design, best part is you get sharp quality print, multiple colors, cost effective-- .. I will cover digital printing in detail in upcoming post.
