random startup problem x5 e70

Hi everyone. A friend of mine is having a problem with his X5 E70. He unlocks the vehicle, manages to turn the ignition on, but the car won't start… He does this 3-4 times and then it starts… BMW told him to replace the ECU. Do you think it's possible the problem is with the ECU, or could it be something else?
