Hi! I recently came across a pigeon with a dangling wing. I’m a veterinarian, so I decided to take him in and see what I could do to help (not a lot of experience with birds). It turns out he had recently been shot with a pellet gun :(. Also, the poor thing was emaciated and covered in feather and pigeon lice.

I was able to remove the bullet, bandage the wing (as seen in the photo), and will be rehabbing him until he’s all healed up. An avian vet friend of mine thinks he‘s got a pretty good shot at flying again. If not, I have a rescue willing to take him in after treatment. However, he seems pretty scared/depressed and i’m nervous about the stress taking a toll on his health. I really need help making his stay with me as enjoyable as possible.

Right now he has a heating pad, blankets, a pigeon seed mix, and water. Should I add toys? Treats?

I keep the cage uncovered during the day but cover it at night. He is currently staying at the clinic but i’m not against taking him home if that’s better? I have cats but a safe, enclosed yard he might like?

Any help is very appreciated! The goal is to fatten him up and keep him stress-free so that he heals as quickly and safely as possible.

Thank you!!!
