**A escalating standoff at a New Jersey immigration detention center has prompted DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin to threaten a halt to international flight processing in major American cities.**

The dispute centers on Delaney Hall, a federal immigration facility in Newark where roughly 300 detainees have launched hunger and labor strikes to protest subpar medical care and spoiled food. Outside the facility, demonstrations by family members and local activists have drawn the participation of high-ranking state officials, including New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill and both U.S. senators. Tensions rose further after state health inspectors were denied entry to the building, leading to clashes between federal agents and local leaders.

In response to the friction, Mullin announced on national television that DHS may divert Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers away from airports to secure federal facilities. Mullin stated that if local law enforcement refuses to protect federal property from protesters, CBP personnel will be reassigned. Because airports in these jurisdictions would lack customs officers to process arriving passengers, international flights would effectively be unable to land.

The threat targets major transit hubs in sanctuary jurisdictions, including New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, and Boston. Aviation and economic analysts note that airlines cannot easily reroute international traffic due to rigid airport landing slots, meaning the policy would result in widespread flight cancellations, stranded travelers, and disrupted supply chains.

Opponents view the proposal as political theater designed to signal compliance with the administration's hardline immigration agenda. Nayna Gupta of the American Immigration Council noted that federal courts have consistently ruled under the Tenth Amendment that the federal government cannot coerce state and local authorities into enforcing federal immigration laws.

The American Immigration Council recently published an alternative policy framework advocating for federal funding to support states managing large immigrant populations, aiming to build local trust rather than relying on punitive measures.

While it remains unclear if DHS will implement the airport reassignments, political strategists suggest the economic fallout could damage the administration's polling numbers and harm Republican congressional candidates in competitive suburban districts ahead of the midterm elections.
