For the first time in the Open Era, not a single active men’s Grand Slam champion has survived to the Round of 16 at a major.
In fact, from my quick scan, it’s only the 4th time in the Open Era that at least one Slam champion hasn’t made it to the QFs. The closest we’ve come to this historically:
2003 Wimbledon: QF lineup included #4 Federer (who’d win his maiden Slam), #5 Roddick, #8 Schalken, #10 Henman, #13 Grosjean, Philippoussis, Björkman, and Popp. The last Slam champions standing were #2 Agassi and #3 Ferrero, who lost to Philippoussis and Grosjean, respectively, in the 4R.
2020 US Open: QF lineup was #2 Thiem (who’d win his maiden Slam), #3 Medvedev, #5 Zverev, #10 Rublev, #12 Shapovalov, #20 Carreño Busta, #21 de Minaur, and #27 Ćorić. The last Slam champion standing was #1 Djokovic, who of course incurred an infamous DQ against PCB in the Round of 16.
2022 US Open: QF lineup was #3 Alcaraz (who’d win his maiden Slam), #5 Ruud, #9 Rublev, #11 Sinner, #13 Berrettini, #22 Tiafoe, #23 Kyrgios, and #27 Khachanov. The last Slam champions standing were #1 Medvedev, #2 Nadal, and #15 Čilić, who lost in the 4R to Kyrgios, Tiafoe, and Alcaraz, respectively.
Interestingly, in all of these tournaments, the highest seed that ended up surviving to the QF stage went on to win the tournament, and the 3 finalists were all either the second- or third-highest seeds remaining in the draw at that point.
