I’ve been messing around with the Meta DAT for iOS and built an early version of an app called RoloView.

The basic idea is simple: instead of swapping QR codes, LinkedIn profiles, or business cards, two RoloView users can meet in person and see a small business-card style profile appear in the glasses HUD.

So, for example, if you’re at a meetup, conference, hackathon, coworking space, etc., your glasses could show someone’s name, role, company, socials, or whatever they chose to share.

A few privacy things I wanted to build in from the start:

* Users have to register and opt in. This is not meant to identify random people walking around.
* Users can choose whether they show up in searches, similar to having a private profile.
* I’m not storing face photos as JPGs. The matching uses embeddings, which are basically mathematical representations used for comparison, not profile pictures.
* The app only works inside the RoloView network, so it’s more like “discover other users who agreed to be discoverable” than “scan anyone nearby.”
   * That walled-garden approach obviously makes the app harder to grow, but I think it’s necessary. Smart glasses apps like this get creepy fast if consent and privacy are not the first design constraint.

Small note on the demo video: I can’t record the screen and take the photo at the same time, so there’s a cut where the actual scan happens.

Overall, this was a fun first project with the Meta's device toolkit. I’m opening it up for beta testers soon, so DM me if you’re interested (iOS only for now).

For anyone technical who wants to poke around with similar stuff, I extended an Expo library from the \*amazing\* [FabriBorgobello](https://github.com/circus-kitchens/expo-meta-wearables-dat) on GitHub. I’m waiting on a PR before it’s npm-installable from the main branch [(but you can still find it here)](https://github.com/adilanchian96/expo-meta-wearables-dat).
