How do you handle the bill when eating with family?
I've been a young adult for a few years now with a stable job for 3 years. I make roughly 45,000 a year and live with my boyfriend.
To set up the story, for my moms defense, one time I believe I offered to cover dinner if she helps me with a dr apt, and I then later asked her to split the bill. She got mad and explained what promise I had said, in which I genuinely had forgotten. I feel bad for messing that up, but just know it wasn't malicious. She still holds this over me; she tends to never drop things.
When we started getting dinners together again as i was an adult, there was a another scenerio in the past where I offered to split the dinner bill when eating out with my mom, but she gave me a weird look so I decided to just pay.
After these 2 instances, I have never asked her to split the bill again, and have always paid for dinners. We don't eat out often, but is it wrong to feel annoyed that I pay for every dinner I spend with my mom? We never discuss payment, and I just pay the bill in silence lol. She will thank me for the dinner date in text later or sometime after the dinner, but is this typical? My mother isn't rich but she's definitely not poor either.
I prefer things to be fair, so im always for splitting the bill, and I don't mind taking up 100% of the bill sometimes, but everytime? Plus if someone ever covers my bill, im always like "are you sure?" And if they cover it, ill at least say "thank you, i really appreciate it" right then and there. I dont want to have these negative feelings for my mom, but it just annoys me knowing she will never pay. Especially considering that my boyfriends parents always pay for dinner (which i do not wish for my mom to do at all, but like at least take turns with me here for the bill lol).
How do you guys handle this, do you typically always cover the bill with family?
