After dying while saving her supposed best friend, Vanessa Shelley, Charlotte Emily's soul ended up inside the animatronic Puppet. Charlotte had only one purpose: to direct the animatronics on stage. However, one night another girl, named Marie Lynn Patty, was murdered in the alley outside the restaurant. The girl had a green wristband, and Charlotte was programmed to ensure that children with wristbands weren't harmed. Charlotte left the restaurant, even though it was raining, and found herself in Marie's body.

Charlotte placed the girl's soul into her body so it wouldn't be lost, and then she was deactivated by the rain. A few days later, though, the Puppet was repaired, and with that, Charlotte and Marie were now in the same body. Charlotte had found a new purpose: to save the souls of others. Some time later, they both managed to save the souls of five murdered children, placing them in the restaurant's main animatronics. But then, Charlotte's soul separated from Puppet to follow another path, leaving Marie in the body to continue.

After separating from her body and becoming a wandering soul, Charlotte decided to confront the traumas she developed during her 16 years of life and the 16 years she spent dead. She wandered through pizzerias, amusement parks, and alleyways, leaving behind fragments of her pain after a difficult process of healing. These fragments began to emerge as supernatural entities, such as Phantom Puppet or Shadow Puppet, while Charlotte herself chose to take on a more elongated form, darker than shadows or night, with a set of masks that reflect others.
