There is this controversy going on about a guy (nick)named Tyler Catastrophe. In short, he has a very public and parasocial crush on a semi-famous musician Wilbor Soot. In addition to that, Tyler excused this celebrity's abusive behaviour to his ex-gf, and said some other dumb things.

I couldn't help noticing how MASSIVE and disproportional the pushback was. A thousand videos on youtube criticizing or outright mocking him, countless edits and snark pages. And most of them making fun of his looks (TC is fat and visibly trans) and his audacity for even thinking Wilbor could like him back.

What was disappointing is how "progressive" people joined the harrassment train. Not realizing why TC blew up this much. Willful ignorance or malicious intent - that I don't know.

But they parrot - it's not about his looks, but actually his actions, you guys!!

This argument falls apart when you remember the lolcow/antifandom phenomenon. Look up all the famous lolcows. Tophiachu, Amberlynn Reid, Chris Chan, etc. etc. The pattern is obvious. The bad things people do ONLY matter when the person looks "ugly".

In TC's case, he is specifically mocked and targeted for daring to fall in love with a conventionally attractive man. "An ogre has fallen in love with a prince!". People hate his confidence, bc "uglies" should know their place in the hierarchy and not bother the skinny hot elite. People gleefully put him down, and these bad things TC has done are an excuse.
