Should I continue this online long-distance relationship if we’ve never met?
Should I continue this online long-distance relationship with someone I’ve never met?
I need some outside perspective.
I’m 30F and he is 33M. We met through an anonymous chatroom and then moved to messaging apps. We live in different countries and have been talking every day for about 2 months. We have never met in person yet.
We talk about many different things: daily life, work, feelings, marriage, future plans, random topics, and sometimes sexting. We do not exchange nude or explicit pictures. From the beginning, I was clear about my boundaries: no sex before marriage, no nude/explicit pictures, and if we meet in real life, I’m only comfortable with kissing and cuddling.
He has said many times that he respects my boundaries. He has said things like life is not only about sex, it’s about love and respect, and that he is okay with waiting. He also often reassures me by saying things like “trust us” or that if we can make it until we meet, we can go longer too. Those words comfort me sometimes, but I’m struggling because his repeated questions about “more” make me feel unsafe again.
However, there have been several times where he asked questions that made me feel uneasy. For example, he has asked whether things we talk about in chat could happen in real life too, and then asked “and more?” even though he already knows my boundary. Earlier, he also asked about situations that felt like they could easily lead to crossing the line, and I had to remind him again that I’m not comfortable going beyond kissing/cuddling.
Another thing is that both of us are not very comfortable with phone calls or video calls. Recently, after about 2 months of talking, he suggested that we share more pictures of each other because he wanted to see me more. I agreed to send normal selfies/daily life pictures, not anything sexual. He had sent me one or two selfies during the first week we started talking, but he hasn’t really sent recent pictures back yet.
I don’t want to pressure him to send pictures if he isn’t comfortable. At the same time, I also don’t feel comfortable continuing to send more pictures of myself if the sharing doesn’t feel mutual.
We had planned to meet after around 2 months of talking, but the trip was canceled/postponed. Now we are talking about possibly meeting a few months later. I’m attached to him, and I do like him, but I also feel emotionally unsafe now.
Part of me wonders if he is just horny/curious and asking for clarification. Another part of me feels like he is repeatedly testing whether my boundary has changed.
Should I continue this relationship and observe for a few more months, or would this already be enough reason to walk away before getting more emotionally attached?
What would be the healthiest way to handle this before meeting in person?
