has anyone actually tried CBT-I for insomnia? worked for me just sharing my thoughts
so I've been dealing with bad sleep for a while now. not like occasional bad nights, I mean consistently waking up at 3am, lying there for hours, dreading going to bed because I already knew how it was going to go.
tried all the usual stuff. melatonin, magnesium, no screens before bed, consistent bedtime, cutting caffeine, white noise machine, sleep podcasts, even prescription medication for a bit. some of it helped for maybe a night or two then did absolutely nothing.
what nobody ever told me was that sleep hygiene advice isn't actually designed to treat chronic insomnia. it's maintenance advice for people who already sleep okay. for actual chronic insomnia it was never going to be enough.
someone mentioned CBT-I to me and I kind of ignored it at first. eventually tried it and it was the first thing that made a real difference.
two things changed everything for me. sleep restriction, where you compress your time in bed to match how much you're actually sleeping, and stimulus control, which retrains your brain to associate bed with sleep instead of anxiety. first few nights were rough but by night four something genuinely shifted.
I found a good article if anyone wants to read it, covers exactly what I did and why it works. just comment below or message me and I'll send it over as you know no links here
