What's the worst "safe for everyone" travel rec you ever got?
Friday lighter thread.
Most of us have at least one memory of someone (a friend, a blog, a guidebook) confidently telling us a place is "totally safe, you'll love it" and then arriving and realizing they were giving us advice from a profile that wasn't ours.
Mine: I was told Prague was a no-brainer for a first solo Europe trip. Statistically fine, beautiful, etc. As a Black solo traveler the stares got exhausting by day 3. Nothing happened, but I burned a lot of energy I hadn't planned for. The friend who recommended it is a white guy and had genuinely never noticed.
Not blaming him, he had no frame of reference. But it changed how I take recs from people who aren't matched to my profile.
What's yours? Curious about:
- The destination
- Who recommended it and why they thought it was fine
- What actually happened
- What you wish they had told you
No need to roast the place or the person. The goal is to map where generic advice breaks down.
