# Boom Jug

No one agrees on who first created the boom jug, but nearly every version of the story begins with the same phrase: "There was once a madman..."

Descriptions vary wildly after that. Some accounts claim he was an alchemist of unparalleled genius. Others insist he was merely a lunatic who survived far longer than he should have. Common details include that he spoke to cats as though they were old friends, held lengthy arguments with inanimate objects, and refused to wear pants under any circumstances. Whether any of these tales are true is impossible to say, though scholars generally agree that anyone who willingly carried the earliest boom jugs was probably not entirely sane.

The inventor's stated goal was allegedly simple: "If a fireball is good, then a fireball that keeps being a fireball is better." The resulting creation spread rapidly among adventurers, mercenaries, goblin sappers, and anyone else with a questionable regard for personal safety.

A persistent rumor claims the creator was not only an inventor but also an entrepreneur. According to the tale, he successfully patented the boom jug and included a clause requiring payment of 1 gp in royalties for every creature killed by one of his devices. The story further claims that, despite being presumed dead for many years, his legal representatives continue to enforce these rights.

Whether these representatives actually exist is a matter of fierce debate. Most dismiss the notion as nonsense. Others point to strange letters that occasionally arrive after particularly destructive battles, each politely requesting payment and threatening legal action for noncompliance.

To date, no court has ever confirmed the validity of these claims.
