Did Emily Blunt stutter? How did she reach fluent speech, setting the stage to become a famous actress?
We can only make some assumptions how Emily reached her fluency goals.
According to her youtube videos, Emily Blunt (a famous actor) stuttered around 12–13 years old. She started implementing a strategy.
Strategy:
Changing her voice to a silly acting voice or increasing pitch or accent or something similar,” in which she doesn't experience stuttering. Speaking by impersonating an actor, and eventually this spread to her normal voice.
According to this research Unraveling the mystery of stuttering, 2026:
Reinterpretations of error signals amplify and escalate into warning signals resulting in increased stuttering severity (and situational variability). Let's apply this modern stutter model to Emily's stutter experience.
Emily's reinterpretation of error signals "appearly" changed after implementing “acting/impersonating a famous actor who does not stutter.” For example:
I am not my true self; I am not showing my true intentions and emotions (ultimately reducing social pressure).
- By immersing myself as an actor who does not stutter. Emily is not her true self; she's not showing her true intentions and emotions (ultimately reducing social pressure).
- Immersing in a famous actor who does not stutter means that Emily feels the same as the actor, and thus Emily does not feel pressure to hide stuttering, or fear of stuttering, fear of failure/speaking, or any other perceived or imagined associations related to warning signals
- Emily may worry less about stuttering or relapse because she realizes that she can always, at any time, start using the acting technique
- Eventually the subconscious mind of Emily may have forgotten the old reinterpretations of error signals; basically her underlying speech system “forgets” the “relevancy” of old warning signals. She spoke fluently long-term in acting mode (because that was her “job,” she trained this in school, and later became a famous actor
Over repeated time, this fluency-inducing effect (reverting warning signal to neutral error signal) also spread to Emily’s natural/normal voice.
