North Korea's demographic crisis is worse than most people realise — and it's self-inflicted
Most coverage of North Korea focuses on nukes, sanctions, and Kim Jong-un's latest provocation. But there's a slower, quieter crisis unfolding that gets almost no attention: North Korea has one of the most distorted population structures on earth, and the regime built it deliberately.
Here's what the data shows:
**The military comes first — always**
North Korea spends an estimated 25–30% of GDP on its military. That's not just money — it's people. Roughly 1.2 million active soldiers in a country of 26 million means around 5% of the entire population is in uniform at any given time. When you account for the prime working ages conscripted (men serve 10 years, women 7), the productive civilian economy is gutted.
**The birth rate has collapsed**
North Korea's fertility rate has fallen to around 1.8 — well below replacement level. This isn't just a result of poverty. It's the outcome of a system that incentivises military service over family formation, allocates food and resources by loyalty tier (the songbun system), and has seen periodic famines wipe out entire demographic cohorts. The 1990s famine killed an estimated 500,000–3 million people — and the long-term demographic scar of that is still visible in the data today.
**Why does this matter geopolitically?**
A shrinking, malnourished population means the regime faces a long-term recruitment problem for the very institution it's built its power around. It also means economic stagnation is structural, not cyclical — you can't grow an economy without workers, and you can't have workers when you're conscripting them for a decade.
The irony is that the regime's obsession with military strength is quietly hollowing out the population base that makes that strength possible.
Interested to hear what people think — particularly whether the regime has any real awareness of this trajectory, or whether the songbun system insulates leadership from the feedback.
