Kit Colbert — former VMware CTO — just invested in VergeIO and joined our Board. This is the moment.

Posting this here first because if you've been following the journey from this side, today is the day the outside world catches up with what this community has been seeing for the last two years.

The news: Kit Colbert — the former Chief Technology Officer of VMware, the architect behind their multi-cloud strategy, and the executive who led 2,400 engineers at VMware until the Broadcom acquisition — has personally invested in VergeIO and joined our Board of Directors.

For context on who Kit is: he joined VMware in 2003 as the technical lead on vMotion and Storage vMotion. He ran the Cloud-Native Apps business unit that became Tanzu. He ran the Cloud Platform business unit. VMware named him CTO in 2021. He shaped the modern virtualization era from the inside for two decades.

And today he chose VergeIO as the platform he wants to back, build, and be associated with for what comes next.

What he said:

What Greg said:

The receipt that lands hardest: Topgolf — one of the largest VergeOS deployments in production — runs VergeOS across 100+ venues, offices, and data centers. They exited the entire VMware stack, replaced VMware + VxRail + Rubrik with VergeOS + PowerEdge, and their global infrastructure lead Scott Forehand put it plainly: "Kit Colbert joining the VergeIO board further solidifies that Topgolf made the right decision to move forward with VergeIO. We picked the right architecture, and the right partner."

Bonus for this community specifically: Kit will be joining Greg on the June 11 webinar — "Beyond the Hypervisor Swap" — live at 1:00 PM ET, 45 minutes. If you've ever wanted to put your architecture questions to a former VMware CTO and the founder of VergeOS in the same room, this is the session.

Two questions for the thread, because we want to hear from you:

  1. If you had 45 minutes with Kit Colbert on June 11, what would you ask him about the architectural decisions VMware made — or didn't make — over the last decade?
  2. What's the part of this announcement that lands hardest for your environment? The endorsement, the Topgolf scale story, the architecture validation, or something else?
