A question about blending the highs.
Bedroom DJ primarily mixing house and a bit of techno.
Something I struggle with is blending different high hats. So after a bass swap often I'll find that the old highs from the previous track I'll keep in for another phrase or two. But I always find that when I take them out, I really miss them suddenly. The punch might be gone or it feels very obvious that ive cut them.
So for an extreme example - if I've got a really groovy bongo drum from the old track playing, and I bring the new tracks bass in on phrase. Everything sound cohesive and good. But the new highs coming in are way less pronounced and I mix the new highs in (even blended slowly or on the next phrase) it loses so much rythm and momentum without the bongos. It sounds off.
Is this just a case of keeping them in or should I avoid tracks that do this? I wondered if there was an obvious trick that people use or a system thats agreed?
I dont notice it on other sets I listen too, so I wondered if it was technique or there was an understood rule to not do that.
Thanks!
