**40 Days Later: Amouage & Xerjoff**

All three of these were blind buys. As usual.

Living in a tier-3 town in India means I do not have the luxury of walking into boutiques and testing niche perfumes before purchasing. Decants are not always available either, especially for less mainstream releases. So my process usually involves months of reading reviews, watching videos, comparing opinions, studying note breakdowns, and then eventually taking the plunge and hoping for the best. Sometimes it works brilliantly. Sometimes it does not.

This time, I ended up with two Amouage fragrances and my first ever attar from Xerjoff.

# Xerjoff Tempest Attar (Old Kemi Version)

Part of Xerjoff’s old Kemi collection, Tempest Attar is an oil-based perfume inspired by traditional Middle Eastern perfumery. Unlike alcohol-based sprays, this comes in concentrated attar form and wears much closer to the skin initially before slowly blooming outward. Xerjoff’s Kemi line has always leaned mystical and resin-heavy, and Tempest fits that identity perfectly.

This was my first attar purchase and honestly, I still do not fully know what to make of it.

The best word I can use here is *resinous*. The opening immediately gives me bright citrus, elemi, and a soft rose note, but it is all wrapped in this balsamic, almost glowing warmth. The oud here is very light and refined. Nothing barnyard or aggressive. As it develops, it becomes more floral and musky, slowly moving away from the sparkling opening into something calmer and smoother.

What surprised me most is how slowly this evolves. Sprays usually announce themselves quickly. Tempest feels patient. You notice different facets appearing over hours rather than minutes.

Performance is absurd. Easily 16 hours on skin for me.
What makes this difficult to judge is that I can clearly tell this deserves cooler weather. Despite saying it is technically wearable year-round, something about the resinous warmth and dense texture makes me feel like I still have not experienced this fragrance properly yet. I suspect this may completely transform during monsoon or winter evenings.

So for now, I am still on the fence. Fascinating fragrance though.

# Amouage Beach Hut Man

Beach Hut Man is part of Amouage’s mainline masculine collection and was created by Elise Benat. Despite the name, this has somehow developed a reputation for being one of the greenest fragrances in modern niche perfumery rather than an actual tropical “beach” scent. Concentration is Eau de Parfum, although it performs closer to extrait territory.

I had been putting off buying this for more than a year.
Amouage is my favourite house and honestly, Search is the perfect fragrance in my opinion, so I never thought I would end up buying Beach Hut. But it stayed in the back of my mind long enough and eventually curiosity won.

First things first: there is absolutely nothing beachy about this fragrance. “Jungle Hut Man” would genuinely be a more accurate name.

The opening is aggressively green. Very minty, bitter, sharp, airy, and piercing. The bitterness specifically reminds me of crushed green leaves and stems. Not synthetic freshness. Actual greenery. There is this almost cold sensation to it despite the fragrance having enormous depth underneath.

After about an hour, it settles into something far more earthy and herbal. The mint calms down, the greenness becomes smoother, and you start getting woods, mossy textures, and a slightly resinous backbone. The drydown is where it becomes truly special. Smooth woods, airy incense, herbal greenness, and this masculine elegance that Amouage somehow does better than almost anyone else.

Now for the controversial part.

I once read someone compare this to Hamam soap and unfortunately that comparison is about 90% accurate.
The funny thing is… I do not care.

You absolutely will not smell like anyone else wearing this. In a world full of sweet blue fragrances and mass-appealing freshies, Beach Hut feels almost confrontational. It smells expensive, mature, strange, and incredibly self-assured.

Performance is completely insane for something marketed as a fresh fragrance. I could still smell this after 24 hours. Projection is enormous. In Indian heat, this can absolutely become cloying if oversprayed. Two sprays maximum. Honestly, one spray is enough.

This is not remotely a safe blind buy, and I strongly recommend trying it first.

But if it clicks with you, there is really nothing else quite like it.

**Amouage Outlands**
Outlands is part of Amouage’s newer Odyssey-inspired direction where the house started experimenting more while still keeping that unmistakable Amouage DNA of incense, richness, and complexity. It feels like a bridge between old Amouage grandeur and newer modern niche styling.

I had absolutely no idea this fragrance existed until recently.
A friend tried it at a mall in Bangalore and strongly recommended it to me. Ironically, I originally bought this as a gift for him. Then I sprayed it once on my wrist and immediately decided I was keeping it for myself.
There have been exactly two occasions in my life where I sprayed a perfume and instantly smiled.
Outlands was one of them.

A very simplistic description would be: you smell like the most luxurious expensive dry fruit sweet box distributed during Diwali.
But that description also massively undersells how complex this fragrance is.

This thing changes constantly throughout the wear. Every couple of hours, something else becomes prominent. At one point it is warm cardamom and vanilla. Then frankincense appears. Then woods. Then amber. Then soft oud. Then citrus flickers back in again. It feels alive.
Hours 2 to 4 may genuinely be among the greatest things I have ever smelled.

Amouage’s handling of frankincense remains unmatched to me and Outlands showcases exactly why I love this house so much. It feels like old Amouage structurally, but interpreted through a more modern lens. Rich without becoming heavy. Sweet without becoming sticky. Complex without becoming messy.

It is somehow EVERYTHING at once and perfectly balanced.
Warm spices, incense, amber, woods, vanilla, citrus, resins, oud. On paper it sounds overcrowded. On skin it feels magical.
Performance is nuclear. Easily over 24 hours on my skin and clothing. The best part is the constant scent trail you catch while moving around during the day. It keeps reappearing and surprising you.

That said, the opening can feel slightly funky because of the spice overload, so give it some time to settle before judging it. And absolutely do not blind buy this unless you are already very comfortable with rich niche perfumery.
This is high-risk, high-reward perfumery.
It costs a lot, but somehow smells even more expensive than it already is.
10/10. Genuinely a work of art.
