Ratings should always be out of 5 and NOT 10

When people rate things from 1-10, be it food, a movie, an album, whatever. Effectively they treat the rating like a 1-5 system anyway, where 5 becomes 0, 6 becomes 1, 7 becomes 3 etc etc.

No one who finds the thing they’re rating to be poor gives it a 3 out of 10, they tend to give it a “5.5” or “6” out of 10. Rendering the first 4 numbers pointless.

Using the 1-5 rating system allows you to more effectively convey how you feel about the thing you’re rating. You give something a 1? We can understand you don’t care for it much at all. Give it a 3? We can glean that it’s okay, but not quite your cup of tea. A 5? You love it, we can accept that and understand your rating fully.

On the other hand, using the 1-10 system, would a 1, a 5, and a 10 convey the same information to us? In my opinion no. It doesn’t carry the same effectiveness.
