Our family dog killed a neighbors chicken, what does usually happen in this case and how to go forward??

I feel very guilty about this. My stepfather was walking the husky and removed the leash in the neighborhood and from what he told me she randomly disappeared and by the time he got to her she had a chicken in her mouth. I have previously told him not to walk her without a leash because she's a DOG and he can't trust her just because she usually listens to his commands. I hope this is a lesson for him, but an innocent animal shouldn't have died for it. He is planning to speak to the owner and offer compensation, but I've never been in this situation before and I don't really know what to do.

If anyone has any advice please share, i feel like I've failed our dog :/
