Remote-working couple planning 1–2 months in Thailand on a $2,000/month budget – where should we stay?
My boyfriend and I are thinking about spending 1–2 months in Thailand. We both work remotely, so having reliable Wi-Fi is essential.
We're not looking for a typical tourist vacation—we'd love to experience local life, stay somewhere authentic, and keep our costs as reasonable as possible. Our total budget is around $2,000/month for both of us (including accommodation and living expenses), and we'd like to know if that's realistic.
A few questions:
- Which areas or cities would you recommend for a couple on a budget who work remotely?
- Where do locals, expats, or long-term visitors usually look for monthly rentals?
- Are there any websites, Facebook groups, local platforms, or alternatives to Airbnb that are cheaper for finding accommodation?
- Is it a good idea to book an Airbnb for the first week and then search for a longer-term rental in person?
- Since neither of us drives, would living without a car or scooter be difficult? Are there cities or neighborhoods with good public transportation or easy access to ride-hailing apps?
- Roughly what should we expect for monthly expenses (rent, food, transportation, coworking spaces if needed, etc.)?
This will be my boyfriend's first time traveling outside our country, so I want to make sure we plan everything well and choose the right place.
Any advice, recommendations, or things you wish you knew before spending an extended time in Thailand would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
