What role does music play for you when worldbuilding?
More specifically, how does listening to or thinking about music affect your worldbuilding? For me, music is extremely important to my imagination process. I end up working it in in fun ways that try to capture my relationship with it. A few examples:
- in my setting, human military vessels are named after classic rock and metal songs. The main battleship that the story involves is called the Harvester of Sorrow, after the Metallica song. This is for three reasons: the ship and its crew have a reputation for dragging themselves through the bloodiest, most miserable operations in human-controlled space. The song itself is also personally significant because my mom once told me it described my dad, at a time when my dad struggled heavily with addiction. The final reason is that it’s three words and sounds like it could be a UNSC ship from Halo, lol.
- Older bands like Sodom and Kreator have a unique sound that translates well to the aesthetic of a grimy 80’s sci-fi space war, which represents the previous generation of marines and an older kind of war, while newer bands like Tool and NIN inspire the current era, which is more like the Iraq War in space, aesthetically speaking. My main cast is thrust into this newer age of war, led by veterans of this older age.
As a visual thinker with no artistic acumen, the value music brings in translating my imagination into tangible, describable scenes is incalculable.
