I created a Downtime Activities system for my adventuring academy campaign based on Dimension 20's Fantasy High for any academy setting

Homebrew

Sharing it in case anyone is running a similar campaign, whether Strixhaven, adventuring or wizard academy, I think it can work in any academic setting. I kept it loose and flowy, because I like to improvise with the Duality Dice outcomes, and the Difficulty of the tests may have to be adjusted because I still haven't tested it at the table (but will soon). Feedback is appreciated.

Downtime Activities

As the semester passes at Blueberry Academy, students have the opportunity to dedicate themselves to various types of activities. Besides the ever-present Academic Period, for which students need to study if they want to advance in the Academy, we also have other activities that can occupy your time, like work and other more or less legal ways to make money; extracurricular classes and clubs; the endless mysteries surrounding the Academy, its students and teachers; the exciting relationships and your reputation, among others.

Whenever an extended period of time passes, students can choose as many activities as they want among the Tracks to dedicate themselves to, as well as choosing which ones to prioritize, but be careful: the more activities you choose, the harder it gets to balance all the plates, and some might fall.

The Tracks

  • Studies - Your studies at Blueberry Academy. This track represents your performance in classes, your dedication to your studies, and your results in assessments.
  • Popularity - Your reputation among the students. This track represents how much people know you, the opinion they have of you, and your social presence.
  • Money and jobs: Your way of making money. This track generally represents how profitable your job is being (if you have one), but it can also involve other activities you do in search of money, like gambling, doing odd jobs, and even crime.
  • Clubs and Extracurriculars - Other activities outside of classes. This track involves your performance inside Clubs and other Extracurricular activities, representing your progress both in the focus of the activity and in the club's social circle.
  • Relationships - Relationships with other people. This track represents the deepening of specific relationships you want to cultivate, like the one with your family members, friends, love interests, or any other character.
  • Mystery - Investigations you want to conduct. This track represents your efforts to investigate clues and gather information related to mysteries you want to focus on, such as themes from your backstory, school mysteries, and secrets in general.
  • Special: Relaxation - Decompression activities and well-deserved rest. This track represents resting and relaxing activities, which allow you to reduce accumulated Stress. It works a little differently from the others (rules below).

Action Rolls

When you choose your tracks, and the order of priority, you will make Action Rolls to determine your success in the activities. These tests will be of attributes that make sense for the chosen Track, to be agreed upon with the GM, and like every Action Roll in Daggerheart they will have consequences based on the result of the Duality Dice. You can use Experiences normally, however limited abilities (like the Seraph's Prayer Dice, or the Bard's Inspiration) can only be used once per Downtime.

The Studies Track

The Track that represents your academic results uses Dynamic Countdowns to measure your progress against the impending "end of the term".

You will have to progress a Progress Countdown (starting at a number equal to the amount of classes chosen) representing your advancement, versus a Consequence Countdown (5) representing the moment it becomes too late to save your semester. If the Progress Countdown reaches 0 before the end of the academic period, you pass all subjects, and your merit level depends on the remaining value on the Consequence Countdown. If the Consequence Countdown reaches 0 first, you unfortunately failed to pass all subjects, and will have to choose a number of subjects equal to the remaining value on your Progress Countdown to fail.

Of course, you can always arrange other alternatives with the GM to save your semester, like special projects, holiday classes, or another solution that seems appropriate.

Choosing the Tracks

Every time there's a Downtime period, you will choose the Tracks you want to dedicate yourself to in order of priority, and the Difficulty for the tests will be in ascending order according to the priority (meaning, what you choose to prioritize will be easier!).

Furthermore, the amount of Tracks chosen affects the Difficulty of all tests in this Downtime (because at the end of the day we all have limited time and energy).

The Difficulty of the Tests starts at 8 for your highest priority Track, and progressively increases for your next priorities (according to the table below). Additionally, the Difficulty of all Tests increases by 2 for each Track chosen after the first one.

Activity Difficulties Table

Activity PriorityDifficulty
1st Activity8
2nd Activity10
3rd Activity12
4th Activity14
5th Activity16
6th Activity18

Stress

At any time during your Downtime Tests, you can choose to gain a Stress Token to reroll and choose between the results (as many times as you want).

Stress Tokens

For each Stress Token you have, you will need to start with one Stress marked after taking any rest. For example, if you received 3 Stress Tokens, and are going to take a Long Rest, you can choose the "Recover Stress Points" option, but you will not be able to unmark the last 3 Stress. You can still unmark this Stress during the game in other ways, but upon taking a rest, you would go back to having that amount of Stress marked as long as you have the Stress Tokens.

To remove Stress tokens, you can choose the special Relaxation Track. If you choose Relaxation, you do not need to roll anything, but the amount of Stress Tokens removed depends on the priority you choose. If you choose it as 1st, you remove 3 Stress Tokens. If you choose it as 2nd, you remove 2 Stress Tokens. From 3rd onwards, you remove only 1 Stress Token. Finally, the Relaxation Track counts as a normal Track for the purposes of determining the Difficulty of the Tests.
