Killing Cat

Back on the Island, finally got my hands on a rifle, stocked up on food, water, and healing supplies, have a perfect camp at the lagoon... but my character missed every shot and is all out of ammo, do I absolutely need to kill the cat with the rifle or can any other weapon work? Is there any way to get more ammo or is 6 rounds all there is?
