Open-Source AI Agents Are Starting to Look More Like Personal Operating Systems
Hermes Agent now has a desktop app for macOS, Windows, and Linux.
The idea is not just another chatbot window. It is a persistent AI agent that can live across your desktop, terminal, messaging apps, email, and other work surfaces.
It has persistent memory, learns projects over time, creates reusable skills from past work, and can schedule unattended tasks like reports, backups, and briefings.
It also supports subagents, so larger tasks can be split into isolated parallel workstreams. Each subagent can have its own conversation, terminal, and scripts.
The tool side is broad: web search, browser automation, vision, image generation, text-to-speech, multi-model reasoning, and sandboxed execution across local, Docker, SSH, Singularity, and Modal backends.
It is open source under the MIT license, with desktop support for macOS 12+, Windows 10/11, and Linux.
