Debt concern
I was recently selected for a federal civilian position and am waiting on the tentative offer/background paperwork. I’m concerned because I have several credit cards that were charged off in 2025 and student loans that recently became seriously delinquent. The financial issues came from post-pandemic hardship, job instability, high rent, family-support obligations, and personal crisis expenses, but I take responsibility for not addressing them sooner. I have now pulled my credit reports, identified the accounts, submitted an income-driven repayment application for my student loans, made a payment toward the delinquent loans, and am contacting creditors to set up written payment plans or settlements. For anyone familiar with federal HR, suitability, public trust, or clearance processing, how much does documented remediation help if the debts are recent, and should I only address this in the official background/security paperwork rather than proactively bringing it up to HR?
