Are we becoming reliant on AI? Are you worried about skill atrophy?
Interesting stat from an AMA survey out this week: physician AI use in the US has more than doubled since 2023, with over 80% now reporting they use it professionally in some capacity. Three years ago that number was under 40%.
What struck me more though was the skill atrophy concern. 88% of respondents were worried about it, and it was highest among junior doctors and residents, which makes sense. If you're training in an environment where AI is doing a lot of the pattern recognition, are you actually building the clinical instincts you'd need if the tool wasn't there?
Feels like a particularly sharp version of a debate we've had with every generation of medical technology, but I'm curious whether people here are actually noticing it in their own training or day to day. Are hospitals here integrating any of this stuff yet in a meaningful way, or are we a few years behind?
