No longer hypothyroid?
I am wondering if anyone has any similar experiences or any ideas of what’s happening. I am confused. Always thought it was a lifelong thing.
I (F30) was diagnosed with acquired hypothyroidism in 2017 with a TSH of 5.273 and I was put on a low dose of levothyroxine, 50mcg…
I was consistent with my medication for 7 years until my doctor left and I was having trouble finding another primary, and couldn’t schedule my labs right away. My last TSH labs while medicated was around 0.82. This was at the end of 2024. Last time I took my pill was last spring, so a little over a year ago.
I finally get around to getting into a doctor. By then, I’m having all these symptoms I assumed was my thyroid… Fatigue, brain fog, cold intolerance, more depressed and anxious, mood swings, trouble sleeping, joint and muscle aches, hair fall, dry skin… you know, basically all the stuff. I was certain it was my thyroid because it had been a little over a year since I had taken the levothyroxine.
I tell my new doctor what’s going on and my history of hypothyroidism, she does my labs and my TSH is within normal range, sitting at 1.304. My whole metabolic panel came out healthy/normal, vitamin D, iron, and B12 are good… the only thing that’s not completely in the healthy range is my white blood cell count. It’s teetering on low/normal. She basically says I don’t need the medication, I’m healthy, and doesn’t refill my prescription. It’s cool if I don’t need the medicine… I’m just confused.
I always contributed my hypothyroidism to me being given lithium as a teenager, I have a history of treatment resistant depression and was given that as a ‘last resort’ for a short amount of time… I have no history of an iodine deficiency, I specifically buy iodized salt for the nutrient… I don’t know where else this acquired hypothyroidism came from.
I never was tested for Hashimoto’s, none of my doctors really seemed to be concerned about that.
I became vegan to help with my high cholesterol, also possibly thyroid related, as I was told about my high cholesterol around the same time as my hypo diagnosis.
At this point I think my symptoms are mostly mental. It’s probably stress and depression, but that doesn’t explain my labs being so odd considering what a big difference it is going from 5.273 unmedicated, to 1.304 unmedicated.
I was always told it would be a lifelong thing… I am happy if I am somehow cured, because I don’t like the idea of being dependent on a pill forever, but I don’t know what happened or what I did to get rid of my hypothyroidism.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what happened? Any similar experiences with being ‘cured’? Will it eventually come back?
