Publication Contract Questions
Hey all! I was recently contacted by a reputable and well-known (in the USA) university press to write a book based on an academic article I published. This will be my very first book, so I’m excited but also have some questions regarding the draft of the publication contract. FYI: I am writing a non-fiction history book based upon original research.

The press offered me 5% royalties on print copies and 7% on digital. This seemed a bit low to me, I was thinking more like 10-15% on print and 12-15% on digital. Would it be appropriate/acceptable to try to negotiate a higher royalty percentage?

They offered me 10 free copies and 40% off retail price once published. This seems fair, but I just wanted opinions from others who have been published about this.

I will have to prepare an index (I’ve read this is relatively common in publication contracts). How much of a pain is this and/or are there any tips or tricks to make this process easier?
Thank you all for your input!
