Rechecking lugagge on layover in DOH

Need help making a decision. We have a flight booked through DOH airport. The flights are booked on 2 separate tickets, one with Qatar and one with Virgin. They are alliance partners but I've been told the bookings can't be linked.

We will have a 2 hour layover from CDG to DOH at which point we have a flight from DOH to MEL.

I've been advised that whether our bags get sent through is at the discretion of the agent.

1. Have you done this and are the CDG Qatar agents helpful, will they do this for us?

2. If they won't do it, how likely is it we can make this transit if we need to recheck baggage?
