How has your language learning helped other people?
Recently I've learned in a interesting way that language learning doesn't just help you, but can also help those around you. Even if you don't speak their language.
An example that I occasionally come across is, when non-native english speakers don't understand what I'm saying(I'm a native English speaker) ...( 'I'm pretending to understand what your saying' look on their face) ....sometimes I'll just keep flipping through synonyms until I hopefully hit a vocab word. Textbooks and apps don't always use the word natives usually use on a day to day basis. I try to assume that all textbooks are like that regardless of how popular the language is to learn.
I just don't know where to post this but here,
The other day I was trying to explain to an Asian student how to get sale prices in a store. He clearly wasn't understanding anything, so I figured I would just change my wording a few times to see if something clicked. One the third try a dawning look of understanding and shock came across his face. As a language learner myself there's nothing like the universal ' OMG I understood what the native was saying!' face. He finally figured out how get discounts in an American store. As a language learner I was super proud as well.
How has your language learning helped other people? Just curious to know if anyone else has experiences like this.
