**TLDR**; in mourning after budgie was unfortunately killed by dog.

I am extremely heartbroken right now :/

I’ve just recently become a budgie mom and unfortunately had a tragic accident that ended in the passing of my precious baby boy Pico.

I had the day off from work today so I had his cage open to let him hangout around my room since I would be home all day. Well when my mom came home from work she came into my room to come see my birds and she saw that he was out and standing on top of his cage. She tried to hold him (I’ve asked multiple times for them to not bother my birds as I myself am still trying to bond with them and make sure they feel safe and comfortable) and he got scared and jumped off of the cage and onto the floor. At the same time, my dog came into my room as we were trying to pick Pico back up and she got to him before we could and she bit him. She didn’t bit him hard but with how fragile budgies are it was fatal. He passed away in my hands.

I know that no one meant to hurt him but I am just so upset that this happened. He was my first budgie and I didn’t even realize how much I enjoyed being a bird owner until he came into my life (I adopted him after he was found outside of the hotel I work at). I also just bought a 2nd bird recently so he would have a companion and now the companion bird is all alone. I’m just so heartbroken over all of this.

My mom has offered to buy me a new bird and the gesture is nice but I’m just not ready right now. For now, I just want to grieve for my baby, bond with my new budgie (Philip), and learn from my mistakes so that something like this will never happen again.

I hope in the end he knows how loved he was and how big of an impact he made on me in such a short amount of time.
