Resource issue upon age switch

VII - Discussion

Quick disclaimer that I have enjoyed many of the changes introduced with 7 and understand that like most Civ games, it is not complete until expansions have been released.

I make this post to callout a particular issue I have with resources in the hopes it resonates with others and is brought to the attention of the devs.

The issue I have is with resources that exist in the upcoming age being removed or replaced by an alternate resource. I can appreciate how resources may become obsolete or have their bonuses changed between ages, but am frustrated to no end by the removal of resources which still exist.

There are a few elements that frustrate me about this:

  1. The removal of resources altogether can greatly disrupt the design of how you placed your cities and the buildings inside them. Understandable if the resources become obsolete but not when they still exist

  2. Changing of resources - while adjacency bonuses are kept in tact by an alternate resource and you still receive some benefit from having a resource, this is not good enough. First, I often settle near resources I find useful. For example say I want to focus on growth and settle near rice. If my rice turns into truffles, then my resources no longer align with my game plan. Furthermore, if it turns into a resource that doesn’t exist in the modern age I may lose out in the future.

All that said, Devs if you are reading, please make it so resources that exist in the upcoming age are not removed or changed.

(Also an in game guide about how resources behave in each age would be great, as well the civilopedia allowing you to select which age you want to view information from)

Moving on from this issue, I would like to encourage discussion on how you would revamp the trade system. Fighting over resources was a big part of other Civ games and while Civ 7 doesn’t have to be the same as previous entries, it feels lacking in how “easy” it is to obtain resources
