Minecraft: Era's - Would you play it?
I'm a developer by trade who has been playing Minecraft since early Alpha.
Recently I've gotten back into modding and after a trip down memory lane with older versions, I started exploring an idea for a (admittedly very ambitious) project called Minecraft Eras.
It would essentially be a mod where you start back in early Infdev or Alpha, and have to work your way up through various versions by completing version specific milestones to unlock portals to the next era. (For example to get to Beta 1.8, you'd have to do something with a Piston as it was introduced in 1.7)
As such, every era is an isolated dimension, but they all share the exact same seed. So if you go to the coords of your Alpha base in the modern world, you will see how the terrain evolved over time.
I'm aiming for absolute 1:1 accuracy here, so I was exploring sideloading the old game jars in the background so the physics, old mob ai, instant eating, alpha bow machine-gun, and classic bugs like piston BUD switches etc.
Smooth lighting will drop to 0% and you get the lovely neon green grass when your in those dimensions.
I wanted to post here to see if there's actually interest in something like this before i dive too deep into code. (Though I may still try it myself if no one is interested, as it sounds fun)
Would you guys play this? And what old mechanics would be a make or break feature to make it feel authentic to you?
Reading back over this it sounds a little sales pitchy lol, just to be clear, this would be a free open source mod.
