What is the purpose of high-end/expensive closed-back headphones?

Discussion

All of my research would seem to indicate that open-back headphones are largely preferred for audiophile/hifi listening, so what then are things like the Focal Stella, Sony MDR-Z1R, etc. meant for exactly? Would it be for certain types of more bass-heavy music and, like, instances where you’d want the best sound from an isolated headphone? People seem to imply that open-back’s are universally better/preferred for “serious” listening/playback- why is that, and does that suggest closed-back’s will always have some compromise? Can’t the same be said of open-back’s though; that they lack the isolation and bass response of closed-back’s? Just trying to better understand.

Personally, I’m just looking for a nice pair of closed-back speakers strictly for tracking/recording and maybe some casual playback when on the go. For the tracking side of things, where goal is isolation from mics so as to eliminate feedback, I don’t understand why one would spend thousands- however for the best sound with isolation while on the go, I guess I get it? Purely as an at home hifi playback option, I don’t understand their place in the market (expensive closed-back’s).
